My son transitioned to online high school (Keystone) when he got to high school age. He felt incredibly insulted by the entire World History course. He knew everything in the book and more, excepting the Korean War era, which I'm bad with. He wrote a few biography papers on various people through the years, but other than the occasional related handicraft or artwork, we did no "work" beyond reading, watching documentaries and related films, and discussing. We're here to testify that the no workbook, no assignment method can work out just fine.tlryderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07564519433289396373noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1434637449821151727.post-3491196112703830022011-10-12T13:21:03.230-07:002011-10-12T13:21:03.230-07:00Thanks for the kind words Michelle! They also have a kids version which I haven't seen. The basic idea is to use your right had for melody and left hand for chords and learn to play songs you like. It works for most popular music. I learned a few songs this way, but the truth is, it takes practice like anything else. We have a keyboard in the house and I often wish I could find a teacher (formal or not) who would happen to come by every week and just encourage the kids to play with music rather than give them formal lessons.

You might check out the books Discovering Great Artists and Great American Artists for Kids for lots of projects where you work in the style of the artist.

It's really fun reading your blog!Heddi Crafthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10104765469960018033noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1434637449821151727.post-60522880318026664102011-04-25T17:24:03.455-07:002011-04-25T17:24:03.455-07:00Thanks Heather (cousin that is). I am always looking for books that make difficult things: death, slavery, the holocaust, Japanese internment camps accessible and manageable for kids. We're reading from the Story Book section of the Guide right now, and many of these books are considered "bibliotherapy" because they address traumas, both big and everyday, that kids deal with. We recently read ones about a grandmother, a dog, and a father dying (not all in the same book.) I'll look for the Morales books. Why wait till the Monkey gets older to buy him books? Get them now, because they may not be available later and you never know when a kid will be ready for something.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18201527679462413588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1434637449821151727.post-74454687350744549932011-04-19T12:52:08.759-07:002011-04-19T12:52:08.759-07:00You might want to check out Yuyi Morales's chi...You might want to check out Yuyi Morales's childrens books- they are gorgeously illustrated. I saw a couple at the Art Institute in the new kid's section and thought that they were beautiful. You might want to check them out first to make sure that the kids would be OK with them. One was about death (although never identfied as such- he just called Mr. Calabeza and was a day of the dead skeleton) coming to take grandma away, but she tricks him into leaving her through taking a long time with her chores (which involve counting, giving an educational piece). I think that you have to be older to get what is really going on- younger kids probably wouldn't pick it up (my description sounds more morbid that I remember it being). I thought that it was really neat and have it on my list of books to pick up for Chunky Monkey when he gets older.Heathenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16010384305739410013noreply@blogger.com
